Region Profile

Spring Mountain District

Perched above the town of St. Helena on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains lies the Spring Mountain District—a place of raw beauty and refined power. Carved by ancient springs and rugged terrain, this appellation stretches across 8,600 wild, forested acres, yet only a fraction—just 1,000—is planted to vines. These vineyards, tended almost entirely by small, independent producers, vary in elevation, slope, and sun exposure, lending extraordinary nuance to the wines grown here.

Afternoons bring cooling Pacific breezes that sweep across the hillsides, where vines sit between 400 and 1,200 feet. The growing season is long and steady, with daytime temperatures just cool enough to slow ripening, preserving freshness and aromatic complexity.

Beneath the surface, a tapestry of volcanic and sedimentary soils—more than twenty types in all—produces red wines of remarkable structure and finesse. Cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot thrive in this mountain cradle, while chardonnay finds its voice in the cooler pockets. The result: wines of tension and elegance, with lush fruit, fine tannins, and the kind of quiet confidence that speaks not loudly, but lastingly.
