Behind the Art

Profile

Jim Fonseca

For the past five years, roses have been at the heart of my work—each painting a love letter to beauty, imperfection, and the communities I call home. What began as a technical study grew into an obsession, evolving from small canvases to bold, wall-sized murals. The first time I painted a rose on a wall, it felt like my voice finally matched my vision—big, unapologetic, and alive. Every rose I paint begins with a photo taken on neighborhood walks, capturing color, movement, and character from Los Angeles to the Bay Area. These blooms are more than flowers—they're symbols of heritage, growth, and the soul of a place. My work spans private commissions, public murals, and apparel design, but painting is where my heart lives. I create to connect—to honor the beauty in our shared spaces and stories. With each brushstroke, I hope to turn ordinary walls into lasting moments of wonder.

Why Street Art?

“Graffiti is fleeting by nature, often edgy pieces of beauty which challenge our notion of what is art and where it is viewed,” proprietor Sharon Kazan Harris explains. “New forms of art have always been met with resistance.  Art critics found Impressionism shocking: consider this review in The American Register in 1879 about an exhibition of Impressionist paintings: "It was worth seeing for the same reason that one would go to see an exhibition of pictures painted by the inmates of a lunatic asylum." Graffiti originated as an urban art form.  Now it is highly collected by fine art collectors.   It is only the beholder who can determine the beauty of a piece.  One must enjoy this art in the present since graffiti, like wine, is often fleeting."
